AAI Director Roberta ("Bobbi") Liebenberg was honored with the 2016 Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award on August 7th at the American Bar Association (ABA) annual meeting in San Francisco. The award is given by the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession, and is the highest honor bestowed on women attorneys by the ABA. Liebenberg is a senior partner at Fine, Kaplan and Black, R.P.C. in Philadelphia.
In her acceptance speech, Liebenberg highlighted the importance of advancing women in the profession. Among other insights, Liebenberg offered, “If we are to create a truly level playing field, we need many more men to step up as advocates and sponsors for the women lawyers with whom they work.” She also noted law firms’ responsibility in ensuring equality for women lawyers and that firm leaders need to be held accountable for meeting diversity goals.
The Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award was established by the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession in 1991 to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of women lawyers who have excelled in their field and have paved the way to success for other women lawyers. It has been conferred on the country's leading women practitioners, judges, professors and governmental officials. Other 2016 honorees were:
